CALLI

My bum was going numb from sitting on the chair at the library table for too long. But I had a plan coming together in my mind, well, half a plan, and it was the chain Abby had given me that made me realise what we should be doing. It was so simple, and I wished we’d thought about it before.

It had taken me some time to find the spell I needed. I knew I could have asked Lachlan and Cassia, and they would probably have found it easier. I’d seen it in one of the books on fundamental magic the other day when I’d been looking with Lachlan. But I didn’t want to disturb them while they were working with Grey and I also kind of wanted to do it myself, even if it was just to prove I could.

Now, I was staring at the locator spell and making a list of what we would need to gather to perform it. There were footnotes about strengthening the spell if you were casting over a greater distance. Whilst I didn’t think that was going to be the case, I’d made a note to get those supplies as well. In the end, I’d ordered what we were going to need from the same online store Blake and I had used. God bless the internet! We had a fairly well-stocked supply that my mother had put together but I wanted to make sure it was always available to us in case of an emergency. I had a feeling what she’d gathered had a very specific purpose.

I was moving over to the fireplace with my mother’s book to give my poor butt cheeks a rest when Cassia wandered into the room looking quite dejected.

“Going that well?” I laughed.

Grey, not so politely, had told me to leave when I’d tried to help as well. I didn’t hold it against him, though. I knew how it felt like you were performing in front of an audience, and it wasn’t the easiest thing to go through when you were trying to concentrate.

“I’d say the pig-headed brute has just about got it. Lachlan is a far more patient teacher than I am.” Cassia said, dropping down into the chair beside me, looking a bit sorry for herself.

“You can help me with what I’ve been working on if you want?”

I threw her the bone even though I didn’t need any more help. Well, at least not with the first part of the plan. The second half was still a mystery to me, which was probably an indication I needed more help than I was willing to admit to.

“You’re not working on Maverick?”

I cringed at the question. I should be, but what else was there left for me to do. We had the ritual we needed to perform; all we were missing was Grey being able to participate. That didn’t stop me from feeling like shit for Maverick not being my first priority, though.

“I was looking at what we were going to do about the Witch Queen,” I admitted.
